Fall Fashion 2010

I dont claim to be a fashion expert, but I know what looks good, and try to keep on top of things. In fall 2010, I think a lot of the military influenced fashion will continue, such as desert boots and pea coats. Although Im thinking the Pea Coat may be overtaken by the leather jacket and similar pea coat-esque jackets, such as whats shown below:

All of this is a really dope look, as for footwear I think think the Clark Desert boot will make a return. Stores like Urban Outfitters are doing everything to bring this shoe back to the forefront. Chukkas will likely gain popularity as well. I think the best Desert Boot is probably the beeswax. They usually run for 100-130 USD but if you look around you can sometimes find them on sale for around 89. The Clark Wallabee will also likely gain popularity.

I also predict that graphic tees will be tossed in the closet in favor of a plainer more mature look, at least for the 20 and up crowd. Polo, will likely decrease in popularity as well, albeit slowly. One thing I wish people would stop doing is dressing from head to toe in the same brand, people do this all the time with Polo. It makes you look like you're a trying to model for whatever the brand is and it will seem like you bought everything at the same place. I try to not wear more than two items of the same brand at one time. Also, people should keep in mind that most boat shoes are seasonal, and not really intended to be worn in the winter, though sperry does make some that are not seasonal, and are advertised as such. Another dope idea ive seen is people wearing dress shoes in a more casual setting, this can also create a really dope look, especially in the winter as opposed to boat shoes.

Mac Miller: K.I.D.S

I Found out about Mac Miller back in April, and became a fan because of his ability to maintain mainstream appeal while staying true to Golden Age hip hop principles. Also, I was really feeling this dude cause we have similar dress styles and he basically raps about the same lifestyle that I live, so I could really relate. His album dropped on Friday, and needless to say it had a lot of dope tracks, but it had a lot of pop-esque garbage on it too. Mac's only 18 years old though, and still has a lot of time to mature as a lyricist ( he does need some work lyrically). Its going to be interesting to watch him mature over the years. He's already set himself up for success getting a deal with Rostrum records, the same label wiz khalifa is signed to, and collaborating with Wiz and Skyzoo. The day his album dropped, it was the number 1 download on datpiff.com. He's got some excellent production from Big Jerm as well.

If you're feeling it, you should download K.I.D.S. at datpiff.com. Dude has a lot of potential, and he's what Hip-Hop needs right now, so I'm really hoping he improves lyrically and content wise.

Peace

Summer Breeze

So it's been over two weeks since I've came with something new. I've had a lot going on lately so my mind hasn't really been on blogging. Basically I've been Job Hunting, Traveling, Fishing, Partying, and dealing with other stuff all at the same time.

I've managed to keep up with Movies though. I saw Robin Hood, and I was expecting it to be poor, as some of the reviews were bad. It didn't have the action that most summer movies do, and the character development was poor. However Russell Crowe did an excellent job. Cate Blanchet did an excellent job, and Ridley Scott put together a movie that reminded me of some of the epic movies that were popular in the 50's and 60's ( Ben Hur, Spartacus, etc.). Also, I watched Soylent Green, a 70's Dystopian Sci-Fi film about NYC in the future and food shortage, it has a good plot twist ending, and is a must see for sci fi fans. Should also be seeing Prince of Persia this week.

Also, on Sunday of memorial day weekend, I made my way solo down to the Virginia Beach ocean front to link up a friend from school and some of his friends he brought in from out of town. Memorial day weekend is the first night where the strip gets real crowded, and all I can say is it was LIVE down there. Getting back in my "natural environment" per se has really got me into the summer vibe. Now that it's June 1st, I can say its officially Summer! In honor of that, here is summer Madness by Kool and The Gang.

On a sadder note, this Oil Spill in the Gulf has gotten to the point where its completely ridiculous, and the sad part is that this entire situation is due to negligence. The moral is, assume full responsibility ASAP! Before things get out of hand. A lot of people are talking about Boycotting BP, as angry as I am with BP over this, Exxon handled the Valdez situation in a similar manner. Most of these BP boycotters are buying Exxon gas instead! Fucking Hypocritical. How bout boycott all Gasoline as much as possible. The sad thing is that most BP gas stations are franchises, which means BP doesn't get hurt by the boycotts so much as the local business owner trying to make a living does. Not to mention BP owns major oil refineries in the US, Asphalt Companies, and has its hand in just about any petroleum based industry. So boycotting them is nearly impossible. They will get your money! A lot of people are using this situation to criticize the Obama administration, and as much as there is to criticize about his other policies, I don't see where hes done anything wrong as far as the oil spill situation goes. This is definitely going to impact our gas prices in some way, and even worse it will damage the ecosystem for years, more than likely our children will still be dealing with the environmental damage from this. It's really disheartening to hear about all the Fishermen whose livelihood has been destroyed by this situation. Another problem I see down the road, is that this will lead to stricter government regulation of the petroleum industry, which I see as bad thing. In my opinion the less government interference with anything the better.

It's a curious coincidence that whenever some sort of crisis occurs The US Government seems to benefit, in a way that their power increases. For instance, after September 11th, people's fear of terror led them to surrender some of their personal rights to the government (via the Patriot act). After the Bailout, the Government managed to practically take control of the US banking and Auto industries, and They will Likely gain control of the Oil industry after this incident.

Optimist as I am, the United State's future continues to look grimmer with almost every passing day. I really fear that our children will grow up in a dystopian society of sorts. Oh well, That's todays words of wisdom.

Summer Movies

One of my favorite things about the summer season is the Movies. Summer 2010, looks to be somewhat promising as far as movies go. However, don't expect any major blockbusters like last summer's transformers or Harry Potter.

Iron Man 2
See it! Go as soon as possible. It's every bit as good as the first. Robert Downey Jr. and Mickey Rourke are two of the best actors ever and they do an excellent job as ever. I love comic book super hero movies, and after Batman and Dr. Manhattan, Iron Man is probably my favorite super hero. It's somewhat politically tinged but regardless, It's a good movie. SO GO SEE IT!

Robin Hood
So, Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott are teaming up for another movie? Gladiator and American Gangster were excellent movies, so I'm expecting this to be worth seeing at the very least. It Comes out Friday May 14th.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
I like Jake Gyllenhall, and I enjoyed the video game. I think it has a lot of potential. Knowing Jerry Bruckheimer, it will probably end up similar to pirates of the Caribbean, entertaining, but forgettable.

The Last Airbender
The trailer makes this movie look like it should be entertaining, It will be interesting to see if M. Night Shyamalan can redeem himself. It hits theaters July 2nd.

Cross Country Plywood Pushing

I spent my entire life living on the west side of Virginia Beach, where Skateboard and hip-hop culture are dominant over everything else. So consequently, I've been immersed in the Skateboard culture since I can remember. Never been too good at skating, but I've always been a huge fan, and I've always been into skateboard fashion. In my mind Virginia Beach is the skateboard capitol of the east coast, followed by Philadelphia. two of the best examples of Virginia Beach skateboarding are VA Fleezers and the Welcome to Virginia Beach video, one of which features an acquaintance of mine. Both feature a bomb soundtrack, with MGMT and Nas. Also one of the locations in these videos is in front of the High School I graduated from.

Here is Welcome To VA Beach set to Nas' song Rule.

I'm also a huge Stevie Williams fan. I wear DGK from time to time, and to me his style of skating is the most entertaining for me to watch, especially because alot of his videos feature him skating through the hood in Philadelphia, and not at skate parks.

Rasul Allah is in this Love Park video. Besides being affiliated with DGK, hes also the front man for one of my favorite undergroung hip-hop groups; Lost Children of Babylon, who collabed with Jedi Mind Tricks and Wu-Tang.

Now, switching it up Old School to NYC for a minute. Fuckin Harold Hunter and the Zoo York team from back in 97, skating through Times Square! With Method Man and Ghostface Killah freestylin on the soundtrack! sorry for the bad quality but its from a 13 year old VHS

Taking it to the West coast..... I'm a big Fan of P-rod and Nike SB. I been wearing SB's since 2005.

Another lesser known skater from LA is Donovan Strain. I've been watching his Butteryass Monday's Video Blog at Butteryass Mondays for over a year now. Alot of them aren't really skateboard oriented but they are hilarious.

Here is one of my favorite butteryass mondays vids for those of you too lazy to actually click the link. I think everyone should get a laugh out of this.

Enjoy,

Ambient and Electronic

After Hip-Hop/Rap, I probably spend the most time listening to Ambient and Electronic music, mostly of European origin. Hopefully I can plug a couple of my favorites, and my open minded readers might be able to enjoy something new.

1. Boards Of Canada
BOC is a Scottish Duo who's music is reminiscent of the warm analog sound of Moog orchestrated soundtracks from the 1970's that were prevalent in many forms of media at the time. Their music contains themes of childhood, nostalgia, and the natural world. When I listen to their songs, they really do evoke a nostalgic and introspective feeling. A lot of times I listen to their music when im working on math homework or while I'm walking to class. Here are two of their greatest songs in my opinion; Music Is Math and Olson version 3.

2. Aphex Twin
Started listening to Aphex Twin in 7th grade. The mastermind behind Aphex Twin, Richard D. James is completely eccentric, by all senses of the word. He is currently the reigning king of the British Ambient/Electronic scene. I must confess I prefer his softer less percussive stuff off of Slected Ambient Works 85-92 and Selected Ambient Works II

3. Vangelis
Vangelis is a Greek Electronic Composer, famous for doing many movie soundtracks. He did the soundtrack for the 1982 Sci-Fi movie, Bladerunner, Starring Harrison Ford. one of the most introspective Ambient tunes of all time in my opinion was on this soundtrack. Here is Bladerunner Blues:

4. Brian Eno
Brian Eno is an english composer who is essentially considered to be the father and chief innovator of the Ambient genre. He's composed many movie soundtracks, worked with U2, Paul Simon, and many others. In 1978 he released Ambient 1-Music for Airports and since then he's released 3 other volumes. I associate his music with Winter and Autumn, and consequently that's when I listen to his music the most.

For my readers who might be interested in Electronic but need something more pop oriented I suggest checking out the NYC group MGMT, who's album Oracular Spectacular is an absolute must hear. Also, a no brainer here, the Gorillaz, They recently released Plastic Beach with collaborations from De La Soul, Mos Def, and Bobby Womack.
